Retro_Icontest: All Things Random from somein30

Sorry for being AWOL for a few months. I wasn't feeling really inspired, and ever since the end of January, things have been crazy in RL particularly at my job, so I haven't really been doing much of anything lately.
But I did periodically check DW, and I was feeling inspired after stumbling on this month's theme forretro_icontest. I didn't do a full 20 icons because I'm still feeling a little rusty, and I'm not too happy with the way some of them turned out. But some icons turned out better than expected, and I did do some experimentation....
01. Random Character: Krystal Jung
Used a random candid of Krystal while she was abroad.
02. Randomretro_icontestChallenge: Round 6, Roll the Dice, Box #4, Technical Theme
The technical themes were profile, chiaroscuro, soft, close crop, and scenery. I used all the technical themes except scenery. I was actually really happy with the way the icon turned out. I have never been good with the soft chiaroscuro look, and I have always envied makers who could pull this look off, lol!
03. Random Praise: "Very simple but effective idea to use black to crop the icon. I like the result, and it adds depth to the icon, too."
I admit I had a lot of trouble with this one. I actually went back and found the icon that this praise went with because I couldn't figure out what using black to crop the icon. Tbh, I don't really like the way it turned out. I was trying to go for a gradient transition to the shadows of Yuna's face, but the icon just doesn't feel so cohesive. T-T
04. Random Screencap: Mulan
I think this one turned out okay. My original plan was a more ambitious icon with text behind Mulan, but in the end, I settled for cutting her out and using a purple background. I think the quality and coloring turned out pretty well, but I'm not too happy with the background. This is what I get for not making icons for several months. T-T
05. Random Song Lyrics: "When you held my hand"
I just pulled the most inspiring part of the song since I didn't really know it. And I thought of Mr. Knightley holding Emma's hand in support when she broke the news of her engagement to her father. I've iconned the shot before, so I tried to make the icon a little more unique by going with a different coloring style. I ended up going with a vibrant but soft coloring style that didn't turn out half bad.
06. Random Tutorial: Tutorial by justmyb0nes
The tutorial was so simple that I was having trouble with it because ever picture I tried looked super awful. I looked back at tinny's comments and realized that I could use the techniques from the tutorial but tweak it. So I ended up just using the adjustment layers from the tutorial but adding some coloring and textures and tweaking the adjustment layers.
07. Random Movie Poster: The China Syndrome
I pulled from the color scheme (yellows and blacks with a touch of orange) of the poster as well as the design elements. I never watched the movie, so I thought it was the line graph was from the heartbeat monitor not the readings for the nuclear power plant, lol.
08. Random Quote: "As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation — either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course." ― Martin Luther King Jr.
I chose to be inspired by the phrase "transform...into a creative force." While I did go to my usually "painty" style, I went for a slightly softer look, and I was also inspired by this painting of Empress Sisi. I love using star textures in general, but in this case, I was going for a look that resembled the heart of the painting. I was also inspired by some reels I saw of Romy Schneider as Sisi, particularly in her white dress and star hairpins.
09. Random Textures: This texture, this texture, and this texture.
I actually used all three textures in my icon, but you probably can only see two.
10. Random Font: Xtreem-2
I paired this font with Kim Yuna's photoshoot with Noblesse
11. Random Trope: Butt Biter
For this one, I went with a scene from The Emperor's New Groove. It didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, and it wanted some text, but nothing I tried worked. T-T
12. Random Remake:
Opted to do a close crop and a softer, dreamier, watery look.
13. Random Song Title: Girl's Talk
Decided to do an animated icon!
14. Random Icon Inspiration:
I opted to go for a gradated color scheme like the icon has and the center crop.
15. Random Color Palette: Waves
I decided to go with a layered look of color blobs and outlines.
16. Random Art: This piece
I just opted to use repetition and geometric shapes for this icon as an interpretation of the art styles. Not sure if I like it though. T-T
17. Random Album Cover: This album
I decided to use a newspaper-y texture from my Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! set.
18. Random Book Cover: This Book
19. Random Word: Check
So I used the word to mean check as in check the box! ^^
20. Random Screencaps: Emma
