Yeah, it can be hard to get used to. I started out with GIMP and then tried PSP and Photoshop, so it wasn't so bad. The key to animation in GIMP is merging and arranging the layers.
I don't know if it will help much, but I do have a few tutorials on how to do simple animations: #1 | #2 | #3.
Probably the second tutorial will be the most helpful since I included some screenshots of the layer palette. I think there are some LJ communities that have tutorials for GIMP, but unfortunately between Photobucket and TinyPic, most of the images are unavailable. T-T
