I have to admit, I've never understood how smart objects work. I keep meaning to learn, but it's daunting. /o\
Lol, I know what you mean! I don't know everything about it, but I know that if you set your layer as a smart object before you resize it, it will keep the percentages the same when you resize it. So if you went from 100% to 20% when you resized it, then later if you were ever to need to go back to the layer, it would still be on the 20%. I think you can also do various filters like blurring or sharpening and stuff without affecting the original layer (it shows up kind of like the blending options, I think). I'm not positive, though, lol!
