For this particular icon, my process was a bit different. I started out with two blocks and ended with four blocks of Yuna. I think part of it was because I wanted to get Yuna's parasol in the icon but was trying to do a blocked icon.
First, I started out with this base of Yuna.

Then I duplicated the layer, moved it over, and cut the part of the layer that had Yuna's parasol.

Then I took this texture by mm3butterfly to add a little color and help blend the icon a little more. I added a gradient map [f5c9e4 (0%) to e9d0ee(45%) to 000000 (100%)] and put it reverse then clipped it to the texture (in Photoshop press alt and click between the layers at the same time). Then I set the texture to screen, 100% opacity.

Next, I used jaejunggim's Cold Day curve setting from her Holiday Gift Set 2011. This layer helped to cool the reddish/pinkish tones and brightened the icon.

Then I added a copper gradient map (it's standard in Photoshop) and set it to Soft Light, 40% opacity. This layer helped to give some color to Yuna's skin and to tone down the brightness a tad.

I also added a gray and white gradient map [676363 (0%) to ffffff (33%) to b9b9b9 (66%)] and set it to Soft Light, 20% opacity. This layer helped to brighten the highlights

Next, I added a gradient map layer (e6b224 to ae0052) and set it to normal, 16% opacity. I decided that I wanted more of a pink hue and a less bright icon. This layer also helped give a more matte look to the icon.

Now for the sharpening! I copy-merged and pasted the layer into the icon (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E or CTRL+SHIFT+CMD+E). Then I used the following settings for the paint daubs filter (Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Paint Daubs): Brush Size: 1, Sharpness 1. Then I set the layer to normal, 60% opacity.

But I didn't like how there was too much contrast between the dark background and Yuna's hair and the brightness of Yuna's dress and parasol, so I added this texture by unknown and set it to Screen, 40% opacity.

Finally, I copy-merged and pasted the layer into the icon (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E or CTRL+SHIFT+CMD+E) and moved in down to the bottom of the icon to create a four-blocked icon.

Voila!
There you have it!

Date: 2024-08-02 09:20 pm (UTC)Tried to do this one, but differently. For some reason, both the white parts would not turn completely red, but I like how it turned out. Thank you for this and the others. :)
